CURTC Finals Day, 2016, sponsored by Hannay Robertson Financial Planning

Fortified by an excellent lunch from Sue Ecob, CURTC inaugural Finals Day Finalists put on a great show on CURTC’s younger (Blue) Court. First up was the 60+ final between High markus and Richard Bowers. Games were traded until 4-all including one which Richard won in straight points via a Dedans force, a spin back into the Dedans, a double fault and a second spin back. That would have done for me! But Hugh is clearly made of sterner stuff as he went on to win 8-5. Robin Faux and Grattan MacGiffin started the same way in the 50’s Final, but Grattan pulled away to win 8-4 but it looked awfully close at the end. The 40’s proved a true mix of styles and facially expressions (see photos) as Chris Schramm powered his way past Paul Brown who manfully shouldered (kneed?) the mantle of the 40’s knee braces.

The Ladies were next as the 30’s were inquorate and the 20’s were still battling it out on the Green Court. Venetia D’Arcy definitely had her game face on and was not going to be accused of a slow start. Linda Fairbrother, giving away a few decades (but no points as this was a Championship Final) did start a little slowly and soon found herself one set down. The second set was a classic as Linda turned on the gas but Venetia kept winning the crucial points to thwart Linda’s fight back. Exhilarating stuff! By this time, the 20’s had decided on their Finalists but to see how that panned out, you’ll have to read the post below….. Larger versions of the photos in the Collage above…

On Finals Day, sponsored by Hannay Robertson Financial Planning, the 20’s did battle over on the Green Court to determine their finalists. They was some great tennis but Charlie D’Oyly and Duncan Colquhon prevailed after their Group match went to 6-5 in Duncan’s favour. In the final Duncan started slowly causing one DeDans wag to exclaim, ‘Duncan’s Done’. But he clawed back to 6-7 from 2-5 and had a point to draw level. But Charlie was not to be denied his place on the 2016 Honours board. Some photos, per chance?

Good Friday just got (even) Better…

Jamie & Ed, Neil Mackenzie & Darren Long (Manchester)

Jamie & Ed, Neil Mackenzie & Darren Long (Manchester)

… as Cambridge defeated Manchester in Division 1 of the National League. This means they win the round-robin stage and will host a (or the) final. Ed was in supreme form as Darren Long was swept away after a tight 1st set by a combination of power and retrieval. Jamie also seemed to be cruising through the 2nd set (prompting a certain professional to be say the Doubles would be starting in 10 minutes…) before Neil Mackenzie struck (literally) back to take it. Cool as ever Jamie tuned down the power and turned up the finesse to win in three sets, complete his undefeated year and confirm his MVP status for the Division. (The Doubles didn’t seem to be going as planned when I left). Congratulations! Read More

And … we’re back

As was probably obvious, our website was hacked. We have managed to remove the offending parts and have rebuilt it. Christie Marrian put in a lot of effort (with some help from me) to get the site back up and running.

The hacked website didn’t even fulfill what the hacker had intended: the spread of their virus progeny, as the changes to the website crashed it and brought it down. This means we probably were not targeted explicitly but were caught in the crossfire of a self-replicating virus that wasn’t quite as clever as it thought it was.

We have decided we need to tighten up on our security and our backup strategy so we can survive this sort of mishap more quickly in future; we are not able to guarantee we won’t suffer this sort of outage again, but we can hopefully make it less painful on us

CURTC visit Hardwick House

HHRTC 2, CURTC 3

HHRTC 2, CURTC 3

The Court at Hardwick is magnificent and well worth a visit. The Court managed to be cold and sweaty (which I didn’t fully understand) but it didn’t stop a fine day of tennis. And we won 3-2!
Many thanks to our generous hosts for a splendid lunch and we look forward to seeing them here next year. Of course, Keith and I had our cameras with us

Some fine knees (and braces) were on display in the 40’s Category Tournament that occurred during the website melt-down. Glad to say there were no further injuries to add to last year’s carnage and we all survived physically (if not mentally).
Both semis went to 5 all (and one to 40 all). Congratulations to Paul Brown (who needed the tie-breaker to squeak into the semis ahead of unlucky Nick) and Chris Schramm who will compete for an elbow brace and a place on the Honours Board on Finals day (sponsored by Hannay Robertson Financial Planning), March 12th.
