National League Div 2: Leamington vs Cambridge

Monday 9th November saw Cambridge (represented by Alex Evans and Peter Paterson) go up against Leamington (Zak Eadle and Nino Merola). First on court Alex (14.1) took on Zak (13.8) in what look set to be a very close encounter, and thus it proved to be. With both players at times struggling to keep consistent length on their shots but showing impressive retrieval skills, long punishing rallies were frequent during the 1h49min match. Zak edged the first set 6-5 with some decisive deuce game wins, finding the grill and winning gallery at the critical moments. The second set saw a fight back from Alex who took the set 6-3. Inevitably the final set wound up being decided on a single game at 5-5. Ultimately Zak’s aggressive approach paid off and Leamington took a 1-0 lead in the fixture.

Next into the breach came Cambridge professional Peter Paterson (16.6) who would be facing soon to be Washington assistant pro Nino Merola (21.3). Peter started the match very well, with consistent clean hitting and his characteristic forcing game. Nino could find few answers in the first set as Peter took it to love. Nino staged a mini fightback at the beginning of the second set and managed to square the set at 3 games each. However this proved to be a temporary change to the flow of the game as Peter regained his superb form to take the next 3 games, and the match, in a flash.

And so the bragging rights would be decided by the outcome of the doubles. The Cambridge pair made their combined handicap advantage count, offering few areas for the Leamington pair to attack. The 8 game set won by the Cambridge pair 8-3 and with it the fixture 2-1.

The members of Leamington club were very welcoming and were a respectful (if biased) audience throughout the fixture and made the event very enjoyable.

Watching and Learning…

Kees is a great believer in learning by watching so I was quite keen to learn how he felt the latest National League match (against Queens) had gone (and if anything had rubbed off on my game…) Kees actually beat me to it by calling and we had a quick chat in the midst of our Division 2 (Earthworks not National) League game. Cambridge vs Queen’s, Division 1 – National League

Jamie Giddins, Ed Kay (Cambridge), Charlie Braham, Andy Fowler (Queen's)

Jamie Giddins, Ed Kay (Cambridge), Charlie Braham, Andy Fowler (Queen’s)

Another successful outing for Ed Kay and Jamie Giddins in the National League. Queen’s were the opponents on Guy Fawkes night and in spite of some fantastic tennis from our gracious opponents, Andy Fowler and Charlie Braham, Cambridge did not concede a set on the way to a 3-0 victory. To spice things up a bit for the spectators, we had a ‘guess the number of winning galleries’ competition. Astonishingly enough, nobody got the correct number, 4. So the pot goes on to the next competition (or a clock will be purchased…)

A Gallery of photos follows and those that notice these things will see that Ed (and Jamie, but especially Ed) are less blurry this time. I assure you it is not a case of Ed slowing down… It’s simply that unlike my tennis, my photography is still improving! Click on Gallery

Not The Varsity Match

Capts2Alumni from Oxford and Cambridge Universities descended on CURTC on Saturday, September 26th for hopefully the first annual ‘Not The Varsity Match’ between our two great institutions. The teams were based on Alumni status as opposed to Club membership which boiled down to CURTC and OUTC doing a professorial swap of Prof Guy Kirk (Oxon) for Prof Chris Lintott (Cantab). Read More

Linda Fairbrother (CURTC) and Venetia D’Arcy (CU Ladies)

Last Saturday the Club saw this year’s first outing of the Cambridge University Ladies against the CURTC.
First up was Venetia D’Arcy against Linda Fairbrother. Venetia put up a fierce fight in this low handicap opener taking an early lead in each of the first two sets; however, after a series of well-fought and valiantly defended rallies, Linda’s return to form gave her the edge and she won the third set and the match. Close but no Cigar

Charles D'Oyly and Peter representing CURTC at Queens

Charlie and Peter on Court (photo Peter Jarvis)

Peter Paterson and Charlie D’Oyly represented CURTC in the Charles Acheson-Gray Pro-Am tournament at Queen’s on October 17th, along with nine other pairs. They just missed going through to the semis having been beaten (8-5) by the eventual MCC winners, Chris Swallow and Nick Warner. Queen’s had recently painted some walls which caused them to play slightly differently, as such Peter’s usually bankable main wall Dedans winner flew high by a few centimetres and Charlie’s defence of the galleries was somewhat static whilst over-exuberant for the Grille! In short, a fun and sociable occasion but no need to locate CURTC’s cabinet key for trophies.
