Kees has given me the low-down on this weekend’s tournament. Most (if not all) of the Varsity squads will be playing including Ed, Jamie, Alex and Freddie and not forgetting Sophie. Sponsored by Pol Roger, there is an handicap Singles tournament and the Inter-Universities Cup featuring teams from Cambridge, Durham, Middlesex, Exeter, Bristol and Newcastle.
In the Cup, each match comprises two Singles and one Doubles (like the National League, Division 1) and climaxes with the Semis ~10:30am on Sunday followed by the Final at 1:30pm. There may well be a Cambridge vs Cambridge Final again this year although there are some other low handicap players (e.g. Ben Boddington, 13) participating. All support would be most welcome!
Yes, after 4 years, CURTC had a Home match in the Brodie Cup!
Very many thanks to Peter for marking and all who dropped by to lend their support (much appreciated!!) on what was an excellent day for CURTC.
Next up a trip to Prested or Jesmond on Sunday, December 13th.
More to come………..

Note that Linda is on tiptoe for the photo – to much derision from the Dedans. The 2nd photo is of course of us reacting to the derision…..
Dear Pros at Cambridge, I would like to let you know about the exhibition match NRTC are hosting in December. I’ve managed to secure Rob Fahey and Chris Chapman to play head to head in an effort to raise some funds for the club, show some local members some top class tennis and generally try and increase the awareness or this sport in the local community.
Side gallery only left, £15 each – Call the club 01638 666 612.
Thanks in advance, Savannah Poolman
Cambridge were represented by two players at the 2015 British Open at the Queens Club. First up was Ed Kay against current amateur champion Conor Medlow. With the format being best of 5 sets on Conor’s home court, Ed was staring down the barrel from the start. However, Ed started well, ditching Read More

Monday 9th November saw Cambridge (represented by Alex Evans and Peter Paterson) go up against Leamington (Zak Eadle and Nino Merola). First on court Alex (14.1) took on Zak (13.8) in what look set to be a very close encounter, and thus it proved to be. With both players at times struggling to keep consistent length on their shots but showing impressive retrieval skills, long punishing rallies were frequent during the 1h49min match. Zak edged the first set 6-5 with some decisive deuce game wins, finding the grill and winning gallery at the critical moments. The second set saw a fight back from Alex who took the set 6-3. Inevitably the final set wound up being decided on a single game at 5-5. Ultimately Zak’s aggressive approach paid off and Leamington took a 1-0 lead in the fixture.
Next into the breach came Cambridge professional Peter Paterson (16.6) who would be facing soon to be Washington assistant pro Nino Merola (21.3). Peter started the match very well, with consistent clean hitting and his characteristic forcing game. Nino could find few answers in the first set as Peter took it to love. Nino staged a mini fightback at the beginning of the second set and managed to square the set at 3 games each. However this proved to be a temporary change to the flow of the game as Peter regained his superb form to take the next 3 games, and the match, in a flash.
And so the bragging rights would be decided by the outcome of the doubles. The Cambridge pair made their combined handicap advantage count, offering few areas for the Leamington pair to attack. The 8 game set won by the Cambridge pair 8-3 and with it the fixture 2-1.
The members of Leamington club were very welcoming and were a respectful (if biased) audience throughout the fixture and made the event very enjoyable.

Kees is a great believer in learning by watching so I was quite keen to learn how he felt the latest National League match (against Queens) had gone (and if anything had rubbed off on my game…) Kees actually beat me to it by calling and we had a quick chat in the midst of our Division 2 (Earthworks not National) League game. 1st matches: Ed, Sunday (15th) 2pm; Ed & Jules, Monday (16th) 4pm.
A Gallery of photos follows and those that notice these things will see that Ed (and Jamie, but especially Ed) are less blurry this time. I assure you it is not a case of Ed slowing down… It’s simply that unlike my tennis, my photography is still improving! Click on Gallery
