The view from the dedans on the second day of Varsity lived up to hopes and expectations, as our undercover reporter explains.
A Grand Day Out
I woke at 4am with a gummed up left eye, the result of a streaming cold…. not a great start to a day which promised much. The CURTC Gals were ahead 3-1 and the Lads at least 1-0 to the good according to the latest from Lords. We were off first to MURTC for some Doubles where their pro Will would be deputizing, to the best of his ability, for the still hobbling Bernie. The eye was cleaned up (thanks, wife!), the (right) train was caught, and the underground was providing ‘a good service on all lines’ so Guy and myself were on Court on time at 10:55am (yes, MURTC have moved to a new and improved booking schedule…). Charles and Will proved too strong in the first set but we surprised them in the second. So honours even we set off in search of a southbound 113 and lunch.

On Saturday 28th March 2015 a small field of entrants competed for the CURTC 30-39 Category Tournament. Having won the 40-49 category for the last two years Gary Weller has stepped up a gear. Comfortably winning all of his matches this year Gary was crowned the 2015 CURTC 30-39 Category Champion.
On Sunday 22nd February 2015 13 lucky members contested the CURTC Category Tournament for handicaps 60 or greater. Spread across 4 groups and playing on both courts the group stages provided a few unexpected results based on handicap differences and the fact that these were all played off level. The group winners who qualified the semi-finals were Tony Kennedy, Hugh Markus, Annie Plews and David Hope. Read More
The 40-49 Category tournament took place onSunday 15th February 2015 and it turned out to be a case of ‘survival of the fittest’ or ‘last man standing’. An assortment of knee, shin and calf injuries plus a nose bleed demonstrated how fiercely the tournament was contested. Ed Hyde nearly pulled out with a leg injury after his first group match but bravely battled on, eventually winning his group and earning a semi-final place against Keith Beechener. Despite some keenly fought points Ed eased into the final with a 6-1 victory.
Topping the other group was Nick Heath who won all three of his matches and then also his semi-final against Jon Dawson by a margin of 6-2.
In the final Ed Hyde was in dominant form and allowed Nick Heath only five points as he took the final, and the title, 6-0.

Rob Fahey, the World Champion, laid on a masterclass of Real Tennis at Grange Road as he played first a doubles with three of the University’s Mens team and then took on our top Blue, Edmund Kay.
The doubles match was the first to 10 games and seemed to be going the Blues doubles way as they built up a 7-1 lead. Slowly it became evident that Rob and his partner were merely toying with their opponents as they pulled back, slowly but steadily, for maximum spectator enjoyment. Their opponents managed to creep in a couple of extra games as the score inched towards nine-all, and in a final flurry Rob and his partner took the match.
Having already played a cracking set of doubles our Blues number one, Edmund, took on Rob Fahey in a match of ferocious balls diving into corners and a fair bit of sweat breaking out on their foreheads. It was clear that at a 15-owe-15 handicap advantage, Rob was not going to be able to relax at his end of the court, and there were a few mutterings under Rob’s breath as the latest of Ed’s returned balls was dealt with. However, if Rob was surprised by Ed’s skill of shot he didn’t let it affect the grace of his shots, other that a propensity to his winning gallery shots an inch or two short into the Hazard Second gallery.

Plates of Kees’s homemade humous and some of the french pate, served with red or white wine by Venetia and her assistants went down fabulously as we all enjoyed a magnificent evening of tennis, courtesy of our generous corporate sponsors, Savills and the NW Brown group

The day after Boxing Day saw the usual antidote to Christmas at Grange Road. 24 competitors battled out the annual CURTC Xmas Tournament under testing conditions with rules devised by John Trapp. These included the enforced use of a bisque, which confused even the most experienced players, and doubles with mis-matched handicap pairings.
